14 September 2009 |
The atmosphere was filled with excitement as East Campbelltown prepared to take on Forestville Ferrets. From kick off, the Ferrets dominated the play and managed to keep Eagles in their own half. Ferrets jumped aboard first with a successful try and conversion. It didn't take long and Ferrets came at the Eagles again and scored another one. Eagles weren't fazed by this and fought back to try and get one of their own. Slick running from Kylie Hilder from the Ferrets, set up another one of their players on the wing to sneak past and gift themselves once again. The score was now 18-0. This is the highest amount of points in the whole season, the Eagles have ever let their opponents score against them all season. Eagles seemed unsettled and didn't look to follow into their usual game plan from the start. Maybe it was nerves, but many times during their previous matches, they always seemed composed and sure of what they needed to do on the field - this time, it took longer than usual to find any form.
However, there was some consolation near the end of the first half when Renee Gloss got over the line to score for Eagles and successfully converted it herself. Going away at half time with the score sitting at 18-6, Eagles had to come up with some magic to make the score look more respectable.
Second half saw the Eagles more settled with more passing to be able to let Teina Clark score first with an unconverted try to bring it back to 18-10. Still not wanting to give up, Eagles moved into another gear and got another try by Donna Mahanga and converted by Renee Gloss. 18-16 and it look liked the Eagles were back with hard hitting tackles by Eagles laid a couple of Ferrets on their backs. Eagles standout forward Patricia Uri came at Ferrets time and time again, crushing their players with very explosive tackles - sometimes, two in a row. Again the cracks showed up in the Eagles defence and Ferrets went over for another successfully converted try. Obviously, Eagles were gutted by the one that mattered the most.
You could not take anything away from Ferrets. They had most of the possession in the game and they dominated East Campbelltown, who have worked hard to get to where they are this season. Ferrets were plagued by injuries to their players throughout the season and played most of the season short of 13 players. Their players healed at the right time to come back to finals and take the competition. They were grand final winners last year and managed to keep their hands on the trophy again this year. Final score: 24-16
Four representative players from East Campbelltown Farlane Wineera, Teina Clark, Poihaere Clark and Chloe Caldwell will join the Australian Women's Rugby League squad to tour New Zealand to play a one off match against NZ Maori on 16 September followed by tournament games in the Pacific Cup over the weekend 19/20 September and will end their tour with a test match against Women's World Cup holders Kiwi Ferns on 23 September.
